On December 9th, City Council approved funding for a video sponsorship for the Battleship TEXAS Centennial Celebration. In March 2014, the ship celebrates its centennial anniversary and, in celebration of that event, the Battleship Texas Foundation in partnership with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will host a centennial celebration at the San Jacinto Battleground Park adjacent to the ship. As video sponsors, the City is not only supporting the festival, but also reminding potential travelers that we are home to the ship as they make plans to visit.
The video is being produced by Emmy award winning Alpheus Media out of Austin. The film will be a short documentary with interviews from remaining members of the original crew of the Battleship Texas and will capture their stories to carry on for generations. The video will be featured in numerous places including the Texas Parks & Wildlife website, on the Battleship TEXAS itself, shown on the video screen onstage at the event, in the Texas History exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, during the Normandy exhibit at the WWII Museum in New Orleans, on various social media and in future exhibits.
The centennial celebration, in which the historic video will be debuted and showcased, is a celebration to honor the Battleship and her legendary history, as well as the men who served on her. The public, family friendly festival will be held on Saturday, March 15th and will feature exhibits, a World War I and World War II historical zone, ship tours, a children's activity zone, concessions, Texas Parks and Wildlife interactive booths, and live entertainment throughout the day, including Robert Earl Keen, Reckless Kelly, Charlie Robinson, and Bruce Robinson & Kelly Willis. All of the excitement will end with a celebratory fireworks display that you will not want to miss.
