1. How can I pay for my permit?

Permits can be paid for by visiting the Click2Gov website. Please complete the following steps:

• Put in your application number and hit "continue"
• Click on the option on the left that says "application fees"
• Select the appropriate fee and finish paying

Once you have paid for your permit, please email the Permits department so we can issue the permit and approved plans.

2. What permits do I need to open a business?

• A zoning permit (La Porte's version of a certificate of occupancy) is required for all new businesses
  • A certificate of occupancy is issued only for new construction

• Remodel work to the building you are purchasing/leasing may need a permit. Please visit http://laportetx.gov/1217/Building-Permits for more information
• The City of La Porte issues business licenses for different types of businesses. Please visit http://laportetx.gov/896/Business-Licenses for more information.
• For any additional questions that do not pertain to the inspections services division, please call the City of La Porte main number at 281-470-5020 and the receptionist can get you in contact with the correct department. 

3. How can I complete my contractor registration?

The City of La Porte does not have any separate forms or fees for contractor registration. All contractors must provide a certificate of liability insurance  and any applicable licenses. 

Insurance and licenses can be sent to permits@laportetx.gov.

4. Can a homeowner pull a permit?

Homeowners can perform work to their homes if they have completed their Harris County Residential Homestead Exemption.

5. How much does a permit cost?

Permit costs can be found on our Building Permit Fee Schedule.

6. How long is a permit active?

Per the Building Code, permits are valid for six (6) months. Once an inspection has been scheduled, the permit will automatically be extended six months from the date of inspection. All permits are allowed one (1) extension if there is no activity in six (6) months. Requests must come in writing and fees will be applied. If a permit expires and has already received an extension, the permit is voided and the applicant must apply for a new permit. 

7. What if my project is in the floodplain?

All permitted work done in the floodplain requires a Floodplain Development Permit. Please see our Floodplain Information Page  for more information.

8. Where can I get a copy of my property survey, building permits, or building plans?

Please submit a Public Information Request in order to request these and any other records.

9. Who do I contact about what I can develop on my property?

10. Can the City recommend a contractor for me to hire?

No, the City cannot recommend a contractor because that is a conflict of interest. We recommend contacting the Chamber of Commerce to get a list of contractors. 

11. Can I pay extra to expedite my permit review?

No, that option is not available. 

12. Do you offer inspections outside of business hours?

No. Inspections are only done between business hours. 

13. Do I need a permit for a garage sale?

No, we do not issue garage sale permits. City of La Porte residents can have garage sale signs up Thursday at 8:00 AM - Monday 8:00 AM. Signs MUST be removed by the sign owner before 8a.m. on Monday or Code Enforcement will take further action.
